The Mid-Autumn Moon Festival (Tết Trung Thu) is an annual traditional event that celebrates the lunar harvest. To celebrate this holiday, VAALA and Nguoi Viet Daily News host the Children’s Moon Festival every year, a free series of events spanning two weekends for families to celebrate cultural traditions together while fostering creativity in the younger generations. The Children’s Moon Festival comprises of three events: an Art Contest, an Awards Ceremony, and an Art Exhibition.  ALL THE EVENTS ARE FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!

As the main event of the Festival, the Art Contest encourages youth to explore their creativity in a socially stimulating environment. Each year, approximately three hundred children ages 5 to 15 participate in the 2-hour pre-registered art contest. Their artwork is judged by a panel that includes professional artists, educators, and community leaders.

Our partnership with Festival of Children Foundation (FOCF) continues this year at South Coast Plaza in Coast Mesa, where the Children’s Moon Festival Awards Ceremony will be held. Every September, FOCF hosts a month-long event at South Coast Plaza geared towards children and families, and as part of this programming, the Awards Ceremony brings the rich traditions of the Moon Festival to the diverse community.  Drawing over 800 audience members in previous years, the Awards Ceremony includes youth-led music, singing, and dance performances, art-and-crafts for children, as well as a Fall fashion show.

This year, we are honored to partner with the Bower’s Museum in Santa Ana, where an Art Exhibition of all the children’s artworks will take place. This event is one of the many cultural programs that will take place at the museum that weekend in celebration of the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. The celebration is expected to draw many people from diverse communities.
