Trịnh Y Thư
Biography
Trịnh Y Thư was born in 1952 in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. In 1954 he left North Vietnam with his family to settle in the South. In 1970 he left the country to attend university in the United States and subsequently became a US citizen. He graduated from college in 1976 with a Master degree in Computer Engineering and ever since has pursued a career in Telecommunications working for companies like Alcatel and Intel among others. However, it is literature and music that have been his real love and passion. Since 1984 he has been active in the literary circle within the Vietnamese Diasporas, regularly contributing poems, short stories and literary essays to leading literature magazines read by thousands of Vietnamese emigrants in US as well as many other countries in the world. In the 90s he took over the role as Editor-in-Chief of the Văn-Học (Literature) magazine, the leading Vietnamese literary magazine at the time.
Trịnh Y Thư was the first Vietnamese author who introduced the world-renowned writer Milan Kundera to the Vietnamese readers by translating a numbers of excerpts from this writer’s novel The Unbearable Lightness of Being (Đời Nhẹ Khôn Kham). The book was finally published in its entirety in 2002 and was critically acclaimed as a beautiful and accurate rendering of an important work by one of the greatest writers of the XX century. Another book by Kundera translated by Trịnh Y Thư is the novel The Book of Laughter and Forgetting (Tập Sách Cái Cười và Sự Lãng Quên). Ho went on to translate into Vietnamese a book by Virginia Woolf, A Room of One’s Own (Căn Phòng Riêng). This book was published in 2009 by Tri-Thức Publishing House in Hanoi. In 2014, he was commissioned by Nhã-Nam Publishing House in Hanoi to translate the seminal classic novel Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte.
In terms of his own works, Trịnh Y Thư published a collection of short stories titled Người Đàn Bà Khác (The Other Woman) in 2010; two collections of literary essays Chỉ Là Đồ Chơi (It’s Only a Game) in 2012 and Theo Dấu Thư Hương (In the Footsteps of the Masters) in 2022; a book of poetry Phế Tích của Ảo Ảnh (The Ruins of Mirage) in 2018. His most ambitous book hitherto is the novel Đường Về Thủy Phủ (Road to Thủy Phủ), published in 2024, depicting the brutality of war, the passing of time and the poignant fragility of human conditions.
In 2024, Tạp Chí Ngôn Ngữ, the leading Vietnamese magazine devoted to literature, published a special edition paying tribute to Trịnh Y Thư as a writer making an important contribution to the Vietnamese modern literature.
Trinh Y Thu is also a composer and an accomplished classical guitarist performing regularly in chamber music concerts in Southern California.

The book draws a panoramic view with details, creating an impression of the war, the environment, the social life, and the history of successive periods. And about the crisis that humans face, with its own wrong decisions. Or with the “decision”, the blind, skewed and disoriented direction of history […] This novel, with history used as a very blurred backdrop, manifests its intention, as I see it, towards the light, the peace, the solace, through understanding and belief in the good, that may ultimately heal the wounds of war. – Bùi Vĩnh Phúc, literary critic.
Các nhân vật trong tập truyện bị mắc vào tam giác: Cô độc – Khép kín – Định mệnh. Tác giả không ngại nói ra những từ này đối với nhân vật. Họ sống một nửa cho người, một nửa cho mình. Họ bất lực trước những tình huống xảy ra trong đời, trước những ngã rẽ tâm tư, tâm trạng. Như người đứng trước ngôi nhà của mình bị cháy mà không cách gì cứu chữa được – một hình ảnh, một câu văn, một ẩn dụ được lặp lại nhiều trong các truyện. Họ vật vã, đau đớn. Họ hoài nghi. The characters in the stories are caught in a triangle: Solitude – Isolation – Destiny. The author is not hesitant to utter these words about the characters. They live half for others and half for themselves. They are powerless in facing the situations that happen in life, in the crossroads of their thoughts and moods. Like a person standing in front of his house on fire with no way to save it, an image, a sentence, a metaphor that is repeated multiple times in the stories. They struggled and were in pain. They are skeptical. The past for them is terrible, horrible, they want to forget but cannot forget, they want to bury but it keeps coming back. The present for them is fragile and fleeting. Two bodies close in together, flesh mixing. But the two worlds are still separate and parallel. They held each other but knew they couldn’t hold on. And so, Trinh Y Thu’s stories are not just about the obsessions and consequences of the war. The book is a collection of essays on reading in the spirit of exploring the value and influence of literature in ordinary common life. The book is divided into three parts: The first is about some world-famous literary works that have been translated by the author into Vietnamese. The second part is about prose and the last part is poetry. The text is usually in the form of an article, but sometimes it is a conversation or an interview.
